Do you think Mike Mussina will make it to the MLB HOF?
He has a pretty good case as he has some good stats. If he does , how much do you think his rookie card will be worth? Because I have his 1991 Score #383 card. So do you think he'll make it to the HOF? And how much do you think his card will be worth 10 or 15 years from now?
No. Oh, he might, but I think his chances are on the low side, and Hall election requires a very high standard.
The starting pitchers of his era rate like this:
Godlike: Maddux, Martinez, Johnson, Clemens (unless one reflexively dumps Clemens into a mental trashcan; regardless).
Amazing: Glavine.
Almost amazing: Mussina, Schilling, Brown.
So far only Brown has reached the ballot, and he got tossed after one go. There's lots of reasons why the writers didn't like his candidacy -- they did not like HIM, there were substantiated steroids allegations, and there was the general (albeit stupid) outrage over that huge contract the Dodgers laded on him and the inflexible perception that He Never Lived Up To It, which is some sort of crime in the eyes of men who churn out 500 words of daily drivel. Go figure.
Anyway -- Moose isn't quite the rank of the men above him. Pair him with Schilling, and he's the sixth or seventh best SP of his generation, and I'm not at all sure that the Hall is for honoring the sixth-best of a generation, or that it is interested in honoring the sixth-best of a generation.
1991 Score was massively overproduced. Even if he wins the Hall plaque, even if it is in Mint condition, you're looking at maybe a $2 card in 2025.
